The Pontifical Basilica of St. Anthony, which the people of Padua call The Saint, is the main monument of Padua and one of the greatest masterpieces of art in the world. Recognized by the Holy See as an international sanctuary, it is also one of the most famous and popular places of worship in Christianity.
The architect is unknown; he was probably a Franciscan of genius and vast figurative culture.
The temple was begun in 1232 in honor of s. Anthony of Padua and its main part was completed at the end of 1200.
If overall the majestic building reveals a strong influence of the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice, in its massive and imposing structures it is purely Romanesque, while the entire slender apse part with the nine radial chapels belongs to the purest Gothic.
These different and contrasting characteristics are merged into a completely original whole, which at first sight distinguishes our Basilica from any other medieval temple. The exterior appears very picturesque, especially seen from the apse; instead the interior is characterized by an austere grandeur.
